A Stroll Into Whitby

A favourite destination of ours is Whitby and the surrounding area. We have been coming here for quite a few years as it has many appealing features. It’s a old fishing town, now given over to tourism to make its living. Benefiting this aspect there are many famous features: Whitby Abbey, a ruin thanks to time and the avarice of Henry VIII: Whitby is where that ill-fated ship,  the Dmitri came ashore with is cargo of horror; a connection with Captain Cook as he grew up in the area; wonderful scenery of sea and moor and much else besides.

A good attraction for us are the beeches in the area where Sasha can run free as much as she likes and I can look at the waves as they crash against the shore making a sound that I find so comforting.

We went once more to a wonderful place for lunch – Humble Pie & Mash. And that is what they sell. They have recently increased their vegetarian options in addition to the traditional staples and the food is simple, but wonderful. On this occasion I had the woodland mushroom pie, Mrs W the Romany hommity pie. Delicious. I highly recommend it of you are in the area. See https://www.humble-pie-n-mash.co.uk/ for their website.

We often take a stroll through the narrow streets There are shops aplenty, many selling jet jewelry. This has been made here for many years, being made popular by Queen Victoria as part of her dress during her mourning. Made from the remains of long-dead monkey puzzle trees by time and pressure, it is a lustrous black and sits well with silver.

We didn’t buy anything this time but have in the past, but never in the shops with no prices. If there are no prices then we most likely cannot afford it.
